Bicing: Red On A Gray Day

It’s been windy and gray today. But I love the way everyone zooms along on their “bicing” bikes, which aren’t really theirs at all. For the equivalent of about fifty dollars a year, you can get unlimited access to the bikes, found in rack “stations” literally all over the city. When you need one, you grab it, hop on, and pedal to your destination, where there will undoubtedly be a set of nearby racks to park the bike–at which point it becomes available for someone else. I’d be interested to know if the trend has hit the U.S. yet. It’s the ultimate grab-and-go transportation.

And for whatever reason, their bright color always makes me smile. Moreover, I don’t think I have once seen a sour-faced rider. I don’t think it’s possible to frown when you’re motoring along on something that looks like a piece of saltwater taffy.
