Years ago, when my mother was battling lung cancer, I fell into the habit of lighting candles in the evening and setting them around my house.  Long after my children were in bed, I would sit, very still, the flickering of the votives feeling strangely like a quiet form of company.

Interesting, this instinct that prompts us to seek light.  Each time our family wanders into a grand cathedral or an old monastery, like this one at Montserrat, I feel myself go quiet inside.

You can’t consider the way sunlight tinted by stained glass affects the floor and not wonder if it isn’t having a similarly luminous effect on you.
